Introducing my personal cleaning companion, Baymax the Robot Vacuum! This is one buy that has been an amazing addition to our home of three kids and a dog. To set the scene: we had a robot vacuum fifteen years ago that was always more hassle than it was worth. I was reluctant to venture back into the realm of tangled cords, dirty corners and stuck vacuums. However, a colleague recommended Roborock and this brand has been so easy to use and value-added from the moment I lifted Baymax out of his box.

He vacuums. He mops. He empties his own dust bin, washes his own mops and will send me a hand notification any time his sensors need to be cleaned. Baymax is officially the most self-sufficient member of my household. He even lives in his own sleek white tower that stays tucked away in my laundry room.

Now, I do have Baymax set up so he does not vacuum the kids rooms. That’s an easy update in the Roborock app. I just tap the room and label it as an exclusion zone. Those three rooms are a minefield and I’d probably have to start forking out hazard pay if he had to enter. I’m still trying to get the kids to clean (and vacuum) their own rooms. Baymax ensures all the public spaces get a daily tidy.

Home hack: pair a Roborock with Alexa voice commands and start your cleaning while you’re still sipping your morning coffee. No yelling, and you can start your day reading instead of lugging the vacuum around. I can finally say “Vacuum the Floor” and someone in the household immediately jumps to do as they are asked. I never have to ask twice!

Full disclosure – he does not come with eyes. I added those myself in vinyl using my Cricut. But that’s a story for a different blog section.

Begin your home automation journey and start building your own robot army today. It’s better than a house elf!

Lexi’s verdict: Love that anyone in the family can say "Alexa, start vacuuming" and Baymax jumps to help. He's low maintenance, well designed and effective. What more could you want?

Loved

  • No more hauling a vacuum around
  • Starts cleaning with a simple voice or app command
  • Automatically varies suction for rugs vs floor boards
  • Empties it's own Dust Pan into a central bag
  • Washes (and dries) his own mops
  • Refills & empties his water for mopping (from a tower tank that I fill up once a week)
  • One dust bag (located in the tower) lasts me about a month of daily vacuuming.

Not so much

  • He obviously can't go up stairs. Stair vacuuming is still a kid chore.
  • I do still do a quick floor check to ensure everything gets cleaned – no obstacles for him to go around
  • Stay on top of emptying & refilling the tower's water tanks. The dirty tank can get icky if left too long. I do this once a week.
  • The dog doesn't love Baymax as much as I love him. But they avoid each other.
